Strategy on a small screen, done right

Strategy on a small screen, done right

August 10, 2026 · Mattias Holm

Strategy games and phones seem like a bad match on paper — small screen, imprecise input, short sessions. Yet some of the most rewarding mobile games I've played this year are strategy titles that lean into those constraints instead of fighting them.

Tidewatch Command is a great example. The pause function turns real-time chaos into something you can manage with a thumb, and the tide mechanic gives each map a rhythm you plan around. It's deep without demanding a mouse.

The key is legibility. On a phone you can't afford dense menus or tiny units. The best designs make every element readable at a glance and every input forgiving enough that a mis-tap doesn't lose the match.

If you've written off mobile strategy, start with something built for touch rather than a port. The difference is night and day.
