Ember Wardens
Ember Wardens crams a surprising amount of role-playing into a phone. You lead a band of drifters across a scorched map, recruiting companions whose skills genuinely reshape your tactics rather than just bumping a stat by two points. Swap your healer for a trapper and the same fight becomes a completely different puzzle.
Combat is turn-based and slow in the good way — you plan, you commit, you occasionally regret. The touch interface is clean, with big drag targets that make positioning easy even on a cracked screen on the bus. Story beats are told in short vignettes that never overstay their welcome.
My only gripe is a mid-game difficulty spike that pushed me toward grinding. Skip past that hump and the last third opens up beautifully, with build combinations the developers clearly enjoyed hiding.
What we liked
- Companions that meaningfully alter strategy
- Tidy touch controls for turn-based fights
- Writing that respects your time
